Talk by Praful Chandel from JSS

Informal talk about rural health care in India with Praful Chandel from JSS

The Berkeley chapter of AID (Association for India's Development) is organizing an informal talk and discussion on health care in rural India.  Active grass-root level volunteers, Praful Chandel from Jan Swasthya Sahyog (JSS) is coming to Berkeley to meet and discuss the issues and progress of their initiatives for community health care in Chattisgarh.

His experience in the field should be valuable to anybody interested in building low cost community-based health services in rural areas. JSS is in fact being used as a role model by India's planning commission for expanding health care (news article on the program: http://www.hindustantimes.com/News/platform/The-right-prescription/Article1-245236.aspx)

The meeting will be at 6726 Stockton Avenue, El Cerrito, CA 94530, at 7pm on June 9th (Thursday).
Closest BART: El Cerrito Plaza BART station. 10min walk to destination.
Praful Kumar Chandel (Jan Swasthya Sahyog)
Praful Chandel, has risen from humble origins to be a lay leader of one of India’s most outstanding programs of service to India’s tribal peoples, Jan Swasthya Sahyog (JSS). Born in the Bilaspur District of what was then Madhya Pradesh and now is Chhattisgarh, Praful began working in the villages of the district in 1996 in literacy campaigns. In 1999, at the inception of JSS, he was recruited to help guide and build the JSS’s village program which includes 53 remote tribal communities served by 106 village health workers. He has been in continuous service since that date as one of two Senior Village Coordinators at JSS. He is an indefatigable worker and commands respect of all concerned for his knowledge and deep insights into tribal life. Praful Chandel exemplifies grassroots development work at it’s best.
